Guidelines for Instrumental Music Auditions
Students must bring on the day of their audition:
- A pen or pencil
- Instruments (except Percussion, Piano, Tuba, and String Bass which will be provided by Talent Unlimited HS). Percussionists must bring their own sticks and mallets.
- Two copies of a prepared musical selection of medium difficulty.
- Copy of most current report card
In addition, all students will be asked to play scales and to sight read. Three major scales are required for each instrument.
The following instruments are acceptable for an audition:
Violin, viola, cello, doublebass, electric bass. Guitar applicants: jazz or pop style preferred (not classical). Guitar applicants should also be able to read basic lead sheet notation (not tablature).
Includes any one or more of the following instruments:
Snare drum, drumset, timpani, and keyboard (mallet) percussion including vibraphone, xylophone and orchestra bells.
Latin percussion: Includes Congas, Timbales, Cowbells, Claves, etc.
(Students auditioning on any Latin percussion instrument should also be able to perform on at least one of the above -mentioned instruments.)
Percussionists will be asked to play several rudiments in lieu of scales.
Pianists should also be able to play at least three major scales in multiple octaves with both hands.
