Instrumental Music Department Course Descriptions

JAZZ BAND

The Talent Unlimited High School Jazz Band is specifically designed to perform a variety of music from standard jazz, Latin, rock, and fusion. The daily rehearsal is integrated with a thorough grounding in all areas associated with these genres including study of rhythmic and scale structures, harmonic and formal analysis and most importantly, improvisation. From this training, the students are encouraged to take an active role in making creative and musical decisions during the rehearsal stages. The students are equipped with musical skills far beyond merely reading their own individual part, and take with them a greater knowledge of all the fundamentals of music, including conducting and an opportunity to create their own compositions. Various performances take place in both the fall and spring terms, including semi-annual concerts, NYSSMA festivals and special performances outside of school.

CONCERT BAND

The Talent Unlimited High School Concert Band focuses on performing a wide variety of music from popular, to jazz, to classical, as well as music from traditions outside the western world. Students are also given additional instruction in daily sectional rehearsals, that function in a small group setting. Opportunities are also provided for students to display their talents by conducting and performing as soloists with the group. Various performances take place in both the fall and spring terms, including semi-annual concerts, NYSSMA festivals, and other performances upon invitation.

STRING ENSEMBLE

MUSICIANSHIP I/II

This is a two-year course of study beginning with rudimental theory and piano fundamentals in the freshman year. The sophomore year focuses on an intermediate level of theory followed by a semester of music history. Musicianship class at Talent Unlimited High School offers a variety of opportunities for students to analyze printed and recorded music, develop your musical ears, listen to and analyze great composers and their works, and create and perform music. It is through Musicianship class that the codified language of music will be revealed. Once you have mastered the ability to identify the variety of patterns inherent in music, you will truly understand the inner workings of the art of music as well as possess the ability to create your own. It is assumed that you can read music but have had little or no experience playing the piano. Using a piano keyboard is a practical yet enjoyable way to learn the content of this class as it will enrich the study.

MUSIC HISTORY

The Music History course is designed as part of the Musicianship course sequence and is offered in the Spring term of the Sophomore year. This course focuses on a survey of Western music from antiquity to the present. Major composers and their works are studied and analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on the social context of the periods in which the composers lived and worked.

PIANO

Piano class at Talent Unlimited High School is designed for the beginning student but can be tailored to those students who possess more advanced abilities. As part of the Musicianship 1 sequence taken during the Spring term of the Freshman year, piano students will learn about the arrangement of the keyboard and perform a number of musical compositions. It is therefore strongly urged that you have access to a keyboard for practicing outside of class. Simply put, the more practice time you have, the better you will play.

INSTRUMENTAL SOLO REPERTORY

This class is designed for seniors as a year-long study of solo repertoire in preparation for the NYSSMA solo portion of the exit exam in music which is given every year in June. Master classes are held approximately every 2 weeks in which students perform their work in progress for the class. These master classes provide students an opportunity to perform their work over the course of the year. Constructive feedback is always given by peers and teacher to aid in improving expression, intonation, style, and tone quality of each performance.
